To Read or Be Evicted | April

At the beginning of April, I decided to pull 5 books from my current bookshelf. My mission was to read at least 3 of these books and decide whether I wanted to keep them or donate them to a local thrift shop.

My problem started when I started buying more books than I was reading and now I'm at the point where I only want to keep books that I actually want to read or really enjoyed in the past. Unfortunately, I have already spent money on getting these books, mainly second-hand, so I would like to read them before giving them up.

I'm hoping to do this once a month, where I pick 5 books from shelves, to read, or the ones I didn't get to in the previous month I will carry over to the next month. I'm hoping this will get me to reduce my current book inventory while also experiencing different genres. When I find books at the thrift store, that are from different categories or suggested by BookTubers, I'm more inclined to read them. However, they tend to collect because they're not my typical reads.

Wish me luck on this journey and, hopefully, I will find some surprising new favourites!

The Little Liar | Mitch Albom

Genre | Fiction

I bought this book because we received a lot of copies, at Chapters/Indigo. I was initially interested in it because the format of the book is different from typical trade standards. I found it at a thrift store and wanted to give it a go.

Following the story of eleven-year-old Nico Krispis, its interwoven stories speak of the heartbreak of a naive and innocent boy, who unknowingly led to the demise of fellow Jewish residents to their destination, Auschwitz.

After this terrible realization, Nico never tells the truth onwards.

I Gave Myself the World | Catarine Hancock

Genre | Poetry

Found it at a thrift store and thought it could provide me insight into my own journey of self-reflection and explore what I truly want from life and who I want to be, to myself, and those I love. The cover is also beautiful and artistic, which really drew me in.

The Victorian and the Romantic | Nell Stevens

Genre | Memoir, Non-Fiction

I found this book during an event, at a church, where you fill a bag of books for $5 and this book I picked it up during one of those events.

The concept interested me and I love how it's two stories but during different periods and the challenges faced during those times. In 1857, we follow novelist Elizabeth Gaskell, who after leaving her husband, traveled to Rome with her daughters, meeting her one true love. In 2013, we follow Nell Stevens who is studying for her PhD, on artists and writers living in Rome in the 19th century, and is drawn to Mrs. Gaskell, resulting in her reflection on her pursuit of love and writing career.

Impossibly Tongue-Tied | Josie Brown

Genre | Romance

I've had this book for years, and I have read it before (probably at an age that wasn’t appropriate considering the context of the book). But I wanted to reread it before deciding whether to keep it on my bookshelf or donate it.

A struggling actress, Nina Harte, plays the part of a "erotic phone operatrix" for extra money, and to support her husband and four-year-old son. Nathan, Nina's husband, has his own dreams and after meeting his costar, decides to leave Nina. Unfortunately, Nathan's new lover decides a child would be the perfect accessory and uses Nina's off job as leverage to gain custody of Nina's and Nathan's son.

With the support of Nathan's agent, Sam, Nina goes through the whirlwind of her divorce and custody battle. However, Sam doesn't know about Nina's side gig and Nina doesn't realize Sam is in love with her.

Fawkes | Nadine Brandes

Genre | YA, Fantasy

We follow the story of Thomas Fawkes in 17th century London, who is turning to stone due to a plague caused by the Igniters. Fawkes, a Keeper, is denied a colour mask and is kicked out by his school. He travels to London to search for his father and demands his mask to gain control of colours and earn his place in society. However, when he finds his father he is employed in the plot to assassinate the king of England, who is ordering the executions of Keepers, in the name of White’s wishes and end the Stone Plague and Thomas’s unfortunate infection.

Another book I found at a thrift store, I love the cover art of this book and was curious about it. The description didn’t give much information and I liked how it was told from a male perspective and was a historical fantasy.
